Lisa Loeb was born in Bethesda, Maryland on March 11, 1968 to Jewish-American parents. The family eventually settled in Dallas, Texas. After high school Lisa attended Brown University in Rhode Island where she formed Liz and Lisawith friend Elizabeth Mitchell. After moving to New York and playing coffee shops, friend Ethan Hawke convinced the producers of the movie "Reality Bites" to use Lisa's song "Stay (I Missed You)". The song hit #1 for three weeks in the summer of 1994, making Lisa the first unsignedartist to have a number one song in the history of the Billboard charts.
